Top Recycling Tips for Toledo & Lucas County Residents
Inspired by today’s presentation, here are some easy recycling reminders for everyone at Genesis Village and the greater Toledo/Lucas County community:
- Rinse before you recycle. Food and liquid residue on containers can contaminate an entire batch of recyclables, so give bottles, cans, and jars a quick rinse before tossing them in the bin.
- Keep plastic bags and film out of the bin. They tangle in recycling equipment and cause processing delays — take them to a store drop-off location instead.
- Flatten cardboard boxes. This saves space in the bin and makes sorting easier at the recycling facility.
- When in doubt, check it out. Not every plastic with a recycling symbol is actually accepted curbside. If you’re unsure about an item, look it up before tossing it in.
- Skip the “wish-cycling.” Tossing questionable items in the bin “just in case” can do more harm than good — it’s better to double-check than to contaminate a whole load.
- Don’t bag your recyclables. Loose items are easier for facilities to sort; bagged recyclables often get sent straight to the landfill.
- Batteries, electronics, and light bulbs need special handling. These shouldn’t go in your regular recycling bin — look for a local special collection event or drop-off site.
Small habits like these make a big difference in keeping our recycling program running smoothly — and keeping Toledo/Lucas County beautiful!
